How is a drive-wheel acceleration skid, spinning drive wheels on ice or snow, corrected?

1.Release the accelerator, letting wheel speed slow to match the road speed againCorrect answer
2.Apply the parking brake firmly to stop the drive wheels from spinning any further
3.Steer hard in the direction opposite to the vehicle's own direction of travel on the road
4.Downshift immediately while keeping the accelerator pressed firmly down to the floor

Explanation

An acceleration skid, where the drive wheels spin faster than the road surface allows, is corrected simply by releasing the accelerator, which lets wheel speed drop back down to match the vehicle's actual speed over the road. 49 CFR 383.111(a)(15) names procedures for recovering from skids without describing this case, so this is standard driver-training content, attributed to the manual. The wrong options each add an unnecessary or counterproductive step: engaging the parking brake or the clutch does nothing to address wheel spin caused by too much power, steering hard has no effect on a skid caused by acceleration rather than lost front-end traction, and downshifting while still pressing the accelerator keeps feeding the same excess power that caused the spin in the first place.
