General Knowledge · Skid Control and Recovery

What most commonly causes a commercial vehicle to skid?

1.Driving too fast for road conditions, along with over-braking, over-steering, or over-acceleratingCorrect answer
2.Worn tires on their own, regardless of the vehicle's speed or of any steering or braking input from the driver
3.Icy roads on their own; a skid simply does not occur on a merely wet or loose gravel surface
4.Driving too slowly for the road conditions, well below the flow of the surrounding traffic on the road

Explanation

Skids are most often caused by driving too fast for the actual road conditions, combined with over-braking, over-steering, or over-accelerating, any of which asks the tires for more traction than the surface can provide. 49 CFR 383.111(a)(15) names the causes of skids as required knowledge without listing them, so the specific causes are standard driver-training content, attributed to the manual. The wrong options each isolate a single factor that is not, by itself, the real cause: worn tires make a skid more likely but are not required for one to happen, skids happen on wet and loose surfaces as well as ice, and driving too slowly does not create the excess-traction-demand problem that actually produces a skid.
