Frequently asked questions

What does the Tanker CDL test cover?

The Tanker knowledge test covers 4 required topics, including Inspecting Tank Vehicles, Center of Gravity, Surge, and Outage, and Baffled, Un-baffled, and Compartmented Tanks. These are the required knowledge areas under 49 CFR 383.119. Practicing by topic here lets you see exactly which areas you're weak on before test day.

How many practice questions does the Tanker section have?

This section has 20 original practice questions across 4 topics, each with its own written explanation and a citation to the actual regulation behind it. Your state's real test uses its own question count; Washington, for example, uses 20 questions for its Tanker test.

Are these the real Tanker CDL test questions?

No. These are original practice questions, not the actual Tanker exam questions used by any state. They're derived from the federal knowledge requirements in 49 CFR 383.119, never copied from a real test or a competitor's practice test, and each comes with its own written explanation.

What counts as a tank vehicle for the Tanker endorsement?

A tank vehicle is one with an individual tank rated at more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more, under 49 CFR 383.5. Both figures have to be met together, and permanently or temporarily attached tanks both count, with one exception for an empty storage container tank not designed for transportation.
