Frequently asked questions

What does the Hazmat CDL test cover?

The Hazmat knowledge test covers 6 required topics, including Regulations and Responsibilities, Shipping Papers, Markings, and Labels, and Placarding. These are the required knowledge areas under 49 CFR 383.121. Practicing by topic here lets you see exactly which areas you're weak on before test day.

How many practice questions does the Hazmat section have?

This section has 30 original practice questions across 6 topics, each with its own written explanation and a citation to the actual regulation behind it. Your state's real test uses its own question count; Washington, for example, uses 30 questions for its Hazmat test.

Are these the real Hazmat CDL test questions?

No. These are original practice questions, not the actual Hazmat exam questions used by any state. They're derived from the federal knowledge requirements in 49 CFR 383.121, never copied from a real test or a competitor's practice test, and each comes with its own written explanation.

Is there more to the Hazmat endorsement than the knowledge test?

Yes. Beyond passing the knowledge test required under 49 CFR 383.121, the hazmat endorsement also requires a TSA security threat assessment before your state can issue it, under 49 CFR 383.141(b), unless the applicant already holds a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). This runs through TSA, separate from your state's knowledge test.
