Communicating
Communicating is a required knowledge area under 49 CFR 383.111(a)(8) (signaling, presence, and misuse of communication). Two specific rules tested here are directly codified: 49 CFR 393.81 requires a working horn, and 49 CFR 392.22 sets the exact timing and placement of warning devices after a stop.
Practice Communicating5 Questions
- Why should a driver signal well before turning or changing lanes, rather than at the moment the maneuver begins?
- Why should a driver never signal to another driver, such as with a wave or a flash of the lights, that it is safe for them to pass or proceed?
- Why must a bus, truck, or truck-tractor be equipped with a horn?
- If a driver must stop a commercial motor vehicle on the roadway or shoulder of a two-lane road carrying traffic in both directions, how soon must warning devices such as reflective triangles be put out, and where?
- Why should a driver turn on headlights, using low beams, rather than relying only on identification or clearance lights, when visibility is poor at dawn, dusk, or in rain or snow?
